Roughly 1 year ago, my stepdad gave me his old Nikon D70– finally, after a year of excuses and lagging, I have found the time to learn how to use it.

Oddly enough, I have dim sum to thank.

Face planted in my pillow as usual, I was sound asleep until my mom barged into my room this morning and forced out of bed to eat dim sum with my family. After lunch, we moseyed on over to Costco, where my cousin bought herself a brand new Nikon D3100. We came back to my house to learn how to use these babies and now I’m as excited as ever to start shooting.

As someone who uses simple point and shoot cameras whenever I’m out and about (because let’s face it, it’s not practical to take a giant camera out to a club), I’m not expecting to get too crazy with this DSLR. To be honest, I have mapped out 3 simple purposes for this camera:

1. To take mouthwatering food pictures (this was to be expected, no?)

2. To capture San Francisco and all its beauty (there’s a reason I fell in love with this city)

3. To capture my adventures abroad (my little p&s can’t possibly do Europe justice)

The weather in SoCal is always great (knock on wood), so I’m looking forward to exploring LA this month to get some practice before going abroad. B, I hope you’re ready because we’re about to get really up close and personal with Southern California!
